Raku workshop Saturday 2nd August 2025 6pm to 9pm

£70.00

Our Raku workshops offer a unique opportunity to explore the traditional Japanese firing technique in an intimate, hands-on setting. Set amidst the tranquil beauty of our small farm, each session allows participants to experience the fascinating process of Raku firing.

Raku is a pottery technique that begins with bisque firing, which strengthens the pottery after its first firing. The bisque-fired piece is then glazed and placed in a gas kiln, heated to approximately 1000°C. At this peak temperature, the kiln is quickly opened, and the hot pottery is carefully removed using tongs. The pieces are immediately placed into a metal container filled with combustible materials that ignite upon contact. This ignition creates a reduction atmosphere inside the sealed container, influencing the glaze to produce unique, striking effects. After the smoke subsides, the pottery is taken out and cleaned with water, revealing the distinct and beautiful surface patterns characteristic of Raku ware.

You will be able to choose 2 already bisque-fired pieces of pottery from a selection of styles. After selecting, you will glaze your pieces, and we will perform two firings to bring your creations to life. The great part is that you get to see your results immediately and take the finished pieces home with you.

What you need to bring.

Comfortable clothes and if its chilly dress warm as we work in our barn and outside.

These workshops are for adults only.
